Another Clockwork Orange featuring Mad Donna

Madonna always evoked a sort of Clockwork Orange mentality for me. It is a shame, she and Stanley Kubrick never hooked up in the filmic way.

Tom Cruise killed him, y’know.

But, I love it when I see the ghosts of Clockwork Orange – Madonna’ s new video starring her daughter, Lourdes, who’s obviously been schooled in yoga.

Back in the 80s, the rockers among us began lamenting turning 30 and having to retire from rock and roll, because 'you know...' its just not cool to be 'old,' and be rocking the night away in your spandex pants and dayglow hair. In fact, the younger punks were already mocking the aging rockers like the Stones who themselves mocked the fact that old people don't rock.

Nobody wants to see Mick break a hip onstage and of course, nobody can believe that Keith Richards is still alive, but then there's the 'new coming of age,' of musicians who refuse to roll over for the next Beethoven.

Madonna, for one, just keeps reinventing herself and sucking the blood of the next generation by kissing Britney and kidnapping Justin, and taking her plasticized face on her latest "menopause" tour. Most bonafide rock musicians never thought she had much 'talent,' and now she is proving it by writing her own songs.

What Madonna does have is marketing savvy and sobriety which is not a trademark of most in the pop rock music world. She doesn't smoke and doesn't drink, so she managed to stay sober through the 80s and 90s, which to her credit, advanced her career beyond the usual fifteen minutes.

While the rest of the Baby Boomers are botoxing their way into old age, the conventional wisdom was, if you are a rock musician, you should either die in a plane crash or of a drug overdose, and be forever immortalized. Now, for crying out loud, they are not only staying alive, but they are still performing. Its embarrassing.

Of course, alot of them end up playing in the casinos and there's those PBS specials where the Doo Wop people live. The other day, I almost fell out of bed when I heard my childhood favorite song, "LIGHTNING STRIKING," coming from a middle aged rocker on PBS. I couldn't bear to change the channel until Lou Christie finished. He was a 60s rocker in the days before music video and I had never saw his face or saw him perform.

So, the upshot of never ending rock and rollers is, well, if you are not going to die nobly in a plane crash or of a heroin overdose or even of just barbituates and a high fat diet that causes you to crash off the toilet - then why can't you just go away quietly? Maybe invest in a retirement annuity?

Just steer clear of the skimpy outfits, trying too hard to be 'sexy' at 60, and embarrassing yourself and the rest of us baby boomers. Take up 'crooning' or covering some classics like "Moon River." Or, perhaps, they could try musical theater?

Let's face it, most entertainment careers are short, but if Miley Cyrus is going to be gyrating that way until her old age, she's gonna have some serious arthritus.

Age gracefully, oh young rocker, and Madonna? Most people would rather see her daughter onstage than her.
Oh, wait, she thought of that....see video:

Marlene Dietrich had the right idea - just disappear and stop reminding your contemporaries of how 'beauty fades,' or nowadays, how grotesque plastic surgery can be.
