Levon Helm, a singer and drummer for the rock group the Band, has died at 71. Helm was known for his distinctive lead vocals on "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "Rag Mama Rag," "Ophelia" and other songs.

The Band, which rose to prominence in the mid-1960s as Bob Dylan's backup outfit, later recorded its own albums, starting with 1968's "Music From Big Pink," and famously ended its touring days with the Martin Scorsese documentary film "The Last Waltz" in 1978.

Second Casualty of
Boomer Lore:
Before my time, and Before the invention of teenagers there had been bobbysoxers in the 1940s but no generational tag for adolescence. The cultural deluge of all things “teenage” as the first wave of the baby boom reached puberty made products created for teenagers, from pimple creams to soda pop, big business. Dick Clark was one of the first show business entrepreneurs to leap onto the bandwagon and ride it for all it was worth.  He died at age 82, after a lifetime, a legacy, and laughing all the way to the bank on American Bandstand. Recently,  I heard he may be responsible for the career of One Ryan Seacrest....
